no option to unclock in icloud find my iphone

Hello,

My macbook is locked and I do not know the pin to unclock it. I follow the steps below to recover the pin and unlock the mac.

  1. In Find My iPhone on iCloud.com, click All Devices, then select the Mac that’s locked.
  2. If you don’t see All Devices, it’s because you’ve already selected a device. Click the name of the current device in the center of the toolbar to access the Devices list, then select a new device.

The next step would be to click unlock. However, I cannot click unlock. This option is not available. Instead, I see a greyed out 'lock' option, see picture below.

Why is this option not available and how can I unlock the macbook?

Thanks

MacBook Pro

Thanks for reaching out hatseflatser,

It sounds like your MacBook Pro is locked and you're having trouble unlocking it. We can help.

From what you described it sounds like Find My and Activation Lock could be enabled. A great resource you can use is Activation Lock for Mac, which says:

Activation Lock helps keep your Mac secure, even if it's lost or stolen, and can improve your chances of recovering it. With Activation Lock, your Apple ID password or device passcode is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase your Mac, or reactivate and use your Mac. Even if you erase your Mac remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter others from reactivating your Mac without your permission. All you need to do is keep Find My turned on and remember your Apple ID and password.

It wasn't clear which macOS you are using, so you will want to select the appropriate steps below:

How to disable Activation Lock

To disable Activation Lock, turn off Find My Mac.

macOS Ventura or later:

1. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings.
2. Click your name (Apple ID) in the sidebar.
3. Click iCloud on the right.
4. Scroll down and turn off Find My Mac, then enter your Apple ID password when prompted.

macOS Monterey or earlier

1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences.
2. Click Apple ID.
3. Click iCloud in the sidebar.
4. Deselect the Find My Mac checkbox on the right, then enter your Apple ID password when prompted.

Other ways to disable Activation Lock
- If you don't have access to your Mac or the settings above, use a web browser on another device to remove Activation Lock on the web.
- Activation Lock is disabled when you use the Erase All Content and Settings feature.

If your previously owned Mac shows an Activation Lock window that asks for someone else's Apple ID, the previous owner may need to remove Activation Lock for you.

Hope that helps.

Take care.
