Cannot manage devices on Home app on macOS Ventura

I'm wondering if it is just me, or is anyone else experiencing problems with the Home app on MacOS ventura?

The new Home app redesign in Venture is really great, and the controls all work as expected.

However, I'm unable to manage or configure any/all of my devices.

For example, right-click Homepod tile > Accessory Details.

Then, clicking on the Settings (gear cog) icon on the bottom right of the modal does absolutely nothing.

This affects all devices from Lights, Apple TV etc.

I'm experiencing this on 2 different M1 Macbook Pros running Ventura logged in to the same Apple ID.

Managing my devices from the Home app on iOS works fine however.

Any ideas on what this could be?

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drives from loading

So based upon the users' observations where Safe Boot works as expected it is reasonable to infer there is some Third Party Software installed on the computer that is interfering with this process.

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

The application is free or paid from added features.

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

A bit of a 🤦 moment.

I just realized the same Settings menu can be reached by just scrolling down on the modal.

Which means I'm no longer requiring any help. This is a weird design quirk!

Still, the expected behavior is broken on my User account compared to others.

I'm not too keen on proceeding with Etrecheck.

One thing that is common between both Macbook Pro laptops are tweaks done via Tinkertool.

While I'm no longer proceeding with getting to the bottom of this, I suspect there could be some merit in reverting Tinkertool tweaks.

Hi Gena_D,

Thanks for your response.

Restarting Mac ❌

This problem has persisted through many restarts on both Macbook Pro laptops.

Just to confirm, I have just restarted again, and immediately tried to go through the same steps.

The same problem persists.

Safe mode ✅

I followed the provided instructions to start the MBP in Safe mode. I can see a red "Safe Boot" text on the menu bar.

I opened the Home App, and went through the steps.

The problem does not present itself.

I can click on the cog and the settings screen shows up as expected.

Different macOS User Account ✅

I set up a new User on the MBP, and logged into the same Apple iCloud account to gain access to my Home instance.

I opened the Home App, and went through the steps.

The problem does not present itself.

I can click on the cog and the settings screen shows up as expected.

So this is really interesting.

What is it about both the User accounts on 2 different Macbook Pros that is experiencing the same issue?

What are my options here? Is there an easy way to migrate one profile to the new one?

After this discovery, I tried Quitting all the apps on my main profile right down to the bare minimum, but the problem still persists.

Digging a bit further, the following logs are emitted when trying to click the Settings cog.

Hello nickch85,

To start off, we advise that you restart your Mac (Shut down or restart your Mac) and make sure to restart any applicable Home accessories as well.

If the issue persists, continue by testing to see when this behavior occurs. First, put your Mac into safe mode and test. Booting into safe mode will disable any startup and login items from automatically opening, which can help us to isolate the source of the issue further. When you do this, you’ll see some unusual behavior from the display; this is to be expected. Please follow the steps in this article: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Next, let's see if this behavior persists in a second user account on your Mac. Please follow these steps to make a test account that can be deleted later: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Let us know how this goes, please. Thanks and have a fabulous day!

Forgoing the use of Etrecheck Application is a Users' choice and respect that decision.

Though, from my experience, some but not all users opting for this approach have been know to also install Applications like Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizer, Anti Virus software and other types of Third Party Applications that will Modify or Interfere with the Normal Operations of the Operating System.

Should the user choose to run the Etrecheck Application at a later date, we are always ready to have a look at the report and offer possible solutions.
