As iPhones generally work the way their settings are set,

wondering which list your wife is checking:

Eg:

Else try checking out:

"Change iPhone sounds and vibrations

eg: Do you recognise the "ghost" alarm sound ...

(You can change the sounds iPhone plays when you get a call, text, voicemail, email, reminder, or other type of notification).
