Hover not working on new 2022 iPad Pro M2 IOS 16.2

I just got my iPad for Christmas and an Apple Pencil 2. Pencil works fine, but the hover feature doesn’t work. I tried sit in Apple notes, but it doesn’t register. Hit writes and draws fine, just no hover. There is no hover setting in pencil options. I guess that went away in 16.2. Has anyone found a way to fix this?

Hi Linthorn,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! To enable Hover Text, you'll want to follow the steps below that can help:

See Hover Text on iPad

1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Hover Text.
2. Customize any of the following:
•Display mode: Choose where to show the Hover Text window—inline (near the cursor), at top of the screen, or at the bottom of the screen.
•Scrolling speed: Choose a slower or faster scrolling speed for long text descriptions.
•Appearance: Choose the font, size, text color, insertion point color, background color, and border color of the Hover Text window.
•Activation modifier and lock: (connected keyboard required) Choose the Control key (the default), Option key, or Command key as the activation modifier, which you press to activate Hover Text. To keep Hover Text activated when you triple-press the activation modifier key, turn on Activation Lock.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day.

Thanks for the reply. It wasn't specifically "Hover Text", but rather the hover feature when using the pencil in a drawing application, such as Notes. When I hold the pencil over a page in notes, I don't see a mark below where I am. This is apparently a new feature in IOS 16. I'm running 16.2. Some people online have a hover setting in the Apple Pencil settings, but it's not there in 16.2.

That said, I tried what you suggested, and it did not change.

Actually hover truly was available on older iPads too for a good while. I was hyped for it, and applauded Apple for supporting new features on older hardware. But it looks as if they silently killed the feature, which I'm finding a really sad decision on Apple's behalf. Perhaps hover has a greater distance on the new iPads, but it was perfectly useable on my 4h gen, while the feature was on, even if the hover distance was very short. I found it especially helpful in Sidecar mode, as hover is a much more established, and sometimes necessary feature, on the computer.
