I've used SimpleMovieX for years but it stopped working with Monterey. I'm looking for something similar. I don't need professional editing. I just want to be able to trim from the start and end. I'd also like to remove or rearrange scenes. And it would be great if it worked on a wide range of formats. It doesn't look like iMovie is intended for editing like that. Any suggestions?

Davinci Resolve is a highly regarded video editing app. There is a free version. Whether or not it's as simple as you want is a subjective matter only you can determine.

I did some exploring on iMovie. It seems as non-intuitive as possible but I was able to get it to do what I wanted. Unfortunately, exporting the file resulted in one more than twice the size. This was with medium quality. Even at the lowest quality setting, the resulting file was much bigger than the original after deleting scenes. BTW, both original and exported files are mp4.
I may give Davinci Resolve a try since the size increase might be a deal breaker. Thanks for the suggestion.

I rejected iMovie because it produced files bigger than the original when removing scenes.
I rejected Openshot because the installation process was intrusive, requiring me to change browser settings in a way I wasn't comfortable with.
Quicktime was easy to use and produced reasonably sized files but it isn't my top choice because it only exports mov format.
My choice is Shotcut. It's reasonably intuitive, produces appropriate sized files and offers a variety of export formats. It's free, open-source and has a helpful user manual.

This is what I meant by a learning curve: If you share to file you can set the Resolution and Quality of the output. This means that you can export at both large and small file sizes, large and small image sizes and so on.

Sounds awfully like iMovie to me.
There is a learning curve, but it's not that steep.
Thanks for the suggestion. It took about 1/2 hour to figure out how to cut a scene. But, I might be a moron.

QuickTime Player can do that. Edit menu, Trim (cmd-T).
