How to update apple id settings on Mac?

I had issues with a seemingly forgotten password (carefully written down at the last change, but now seemingly invalid), and I changed my Apple ID. I can access Support with the new ID, which seems to have propagated to my iOS devices. On my iMac, the Name, Phone, Email section lists my new Apple ID email, but under my picture is the old Apple ID email, and I am prompted to "Update Apple ID Settings," which references the old Apple ID email and the password. If I indicate a forgotten password, it wants to change my newly entered Apple ID but if I indicate the old, replaced Apple ID that needs updating, the dialog reports that "This Apple ID is not valid or not supported."

How can I clear out the references to my old Apple ID and use the new one without any data loss?

Salutations ross97401,

We may need a bit more information. Did you change the email address that is your Apple ID or did you create a new Apple ID? Are you encountering any issues syncing iCloud data or purchasing and updating apps from the App Store? We ask this to determine if what you’re seeing is seemingly ‘cosmetic’ or if it impacting functionality.

Since making this change, have you had a chance to restart your Mac? If not, let’s do that. Shut down or restart your Mac

• On your Mac, choose Apple menu > Restart.

If you don’t want app windows that are open to reopen when your Mac restarts, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”

Then log back in to your user and check that area again. Is there any change? We want to be cautious of having you sign out and back in, since it also controls the iCloud login and synced data.

Thanks.
