Migrate 2 iPhone 8 to 1 iPhone 12

I have 2 iPhone 8 work & Personal both are signed into iCloud with my credentials

I will take the Sim from my work 8 and locate into 12 , then place work phone next to 12 and allow to automatically copy over all contents, so far no problem!

I will move my personal number from hardware to Esim and follow the on screen instructions

to activate in the 12

My question is obviously in the case of the work phone will be clone of the works 8 fine

in the case of the Esim personal instal what happens regrading the all the contents eg photos apps etc that are local to the personal 8 do they move across to the Esim personal line ?

Presumably “both are signed in[ ]to iCloud with my credentials” really means “I am using my same Apple ID on both iPhones”. If not, please correct me.

Apps and their data such as calendars, notes, contacts, music etc. are associated with an Apple ID. When you set up your iPhone 12, that data was placed on your iPhone. The apps themselves are not even migrated from any iPhone. They are re-downloaded from the cloud.

Dual SIMs has nothing to do with your iPhone’s data. An iPhone is associated with one Apple ID, and that governs the iPhone’s app and data content.

Installing or removing any SIM, whether eSIM or not, has absolutely no effect on the iPhone’s contents.

Are you certain you want to do that?

The iPhone 12 is capable of 5G cellular. Using a SIM from an older iPhone prohibits that feature.

Your two posts seem to contradict each other about which phone’s contents (work or personal) appears on the new iPhone. Here’s how it will work:

That’s the end of the story. Anything you do regarding SIMs after this will have no effect on the iPhone contents.

I’m trying to end up with both iPhone 8s and their contents on iPhone 12 so I don’t need to have 2 phones in my pocket.

Obviously the work phone (8) on the 12 will be a clone having used the Apple copy over facility!

What I’m asking is, my personal phone (8) contents can I port them over to the 12 so when I choose my personal line on the 12 I will have the appropriate (personal) apps etc

i will of course discarding both 8s

If you wish to maintain a work identity and a separate personal identity (which absolutely sounds like a very good idea), then that requires two separate Apple IDs and two iPhones in your pocket.
