I can't add my Google account to my new MacBook Pro

When I try to add my Google account to my new device it fails the authentication step. I put in my email and password and then it tries to authenticate with the Gmail app or with my phone number. In both cases authentication fails and I get the following message: The server cannot process the request because it is malformed. It should not be retried. That’s all we know.

This problem is keeping me from getting some of my calendar information on the new laptop. I'm also not seeing my old iMessages but I assume that is a different issue.
