Server / SSL error when downloading large files

Dear Experts..

When downloading large files (500MB-3GB) on Safari from different websites (e.g. Microsoft office, music production software, WeTransfer files) on my 2020 MacBook pro (M1, Big Sur) - the files can reach 30 - 200 mb and then return an error message "an SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server was lost" or similar. Generally the WiFi is strong and reliable.

So far I've tried:

  1. Clearing browser data, including cache, cookies and history
  2. Verifying device’s data and time.
  3. Changing DNS settings to google (8.8.8.8. & 8.8.4.4.)
  4. Making sure Keychain trusts the SSL certificates.
  5. Restarting the laptop
  6. Restarting the Wifi router
  7. Tried downloading from Chrome

And none have made any difference. Please share some advice!

Much appreciated,

C

Hey there C_Dolan,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

To get started, you've gone through some great steps that can help with troubleshooting this issue. To help with isolating the issue further, check out the additional steps from the resources below:

If still running into issues after going through the steps above, we'd also recommend testing the issue in a new admin user account. This can help to determine if the issue is isolated to your account, or if the issue is system-wide.

For help with creating a new user account for testing purposes, check out this next link here: Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

Add a user
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
- Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.
7. Depending on the type of user you create, you can also do any of the following:
- For an administrator, select “Allow user to administer this computer.”

Keep us updated on the results.

Take care!

Thanks for the feedback Chris.

I've run through these solutions and still having same issue. Found that the problem persists on another user account too.

I was able to download a large file from a torrent website without any problem, which would suggest that its not an internet connectivity issue.

Any other solutions welcome!

Cheers

Thanks for the advice

I brought it to the technicians at my local iStore. They checked and found no faults and reset computer to default settings but still the problem persists.

I downloaded the software on another laptop, airdropped it and installed it just fine. However the problem is still there.

If Apple offer remote technicians, please let me know

Cheers
