I have added some songs into my iPod 4th generation, the iTunes shows that the remaining space is 9.71GB. However, when I open the "about" in my iPod, it shows that the remaining space is 18.4GB, which is weird.
Note: I have already erased the iPod and added the songs again, but it still shows the wrong information.
The S.M.A.R.T information is:
Retractor: 20
Reallocs: 0
Pending: 0
Sorry for my careless. Yes, the version of my itunes is 12.12.7.1. The time I first noticed my iPod producing odd values was in yesterday, and the available space value in iTunes is correct (changing when I add new songs) and different from the one in "about" (still 18.4 GB).
Note: I directly download the iTunes with version 12.12.7.1, and there's no update for iTunes. The system of iPod is 3.1.1, which is the newest version.

I guess iTunes is getting it wrong for some reason. Yet another iTunes bug. You could drop a line to Feedback - iTunes - Apple but Apple have moved on from iTunes so it isn't likely to get any attention.

But it is really weird that, after adding 4 more songs (average size is 300MB) into iPod with the use of the newest version of iTunes, I can still listen these newly added songs and the iPod works fine. The only thing doesn't change is the available space displayed in "about", which is still 18.4G
I don't know the details of the operating system, but my guess would be that the values displayed in about aren't necessarily derived in real time by checking the file system, but instead are stored data that iTunes should update when it manages the device. You could try rebooting the iPod in case it recalculates them internally.

Thank you for your advice, I have tried this approach (reboot and seeing the apple icon), and reset in the engineering mode. However, after trying these two methods, the displayed information is still 18.4G, which really makes me confused.
Help > About. What version you're able to run depends on what version of what operating system you have so newest version isn't always sufficiently descriptive. And Mac users with Music keep calling that iTunes too.
Shall I assume you mean 12.12.7.1 for Windows? I'm afraid I don't have a 4th gen. for comparison, but my 6th gen. shows used and free, and appears to update with sensible numbers. Do you recall when you first noticed it was producing odd values? Could that correspond with an iTunes update?

The problem has been solved today. First, I change another interface to plug-in my iPod. Then, the iTunes said it cannot process the iPod and recommend me to recover. After recovering the iPod and import all songs from the Library in iTunes, the display of available space is correct. Again, thank you for your patience and suggestions!

The nominal capacity of the device is 18.5G (which is weird that 1024 songs won't take only 0.1GB), the device is 4G ipod with 20G
What is the exact legend? Capacity for example could be a fixed value.
