AppleTV Setup Failed error code (-71163)

When trying to set up an AppleTV as a hub in HomeKit, the app recognizes the AppleTV and tries to connect, but fails after several minutes with an error code (-71163).

I’ve tried re-downloading the HomeKit app, and resetting the AppleTV, but to no avail. I see that over 900 other people have had this issue, with no response from Apple, which seems like pretty unresponsive behavior :-(. Can anyone else help?

Usually you’re bringing an unlocked iPhone near. If you have an iPhone, use that.

To be clear, you’re not ever using the Home App to set up the Apple TV as a Hub.

You do this in Apple tv settings as instructed above.

You’re going to sign into iCloud with your primary Apple ID - go over to the Airplay & Homekit setting to finalize it by choosing a room.

After all this, the Apple TV will show up in the Home App and it’s now a Hub.

Just be sure to use the same Apple ID across all devices.

Update all software first, apple tv, iPhone & iPad.

Make sure keychain and Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone & iPad

its best if everything is on the same home wifi network. Make sure you have internet on your Apple TV and other devices, check airplane mode or low power mode isn’t on with your iPhone.

Reboot the wifi for good measure.

Try it again .

To start, first sign out of iCloud in Apple TV settings, restart (not reset) Apple TV, then sign back into iCloud

Then proceed as instructed above - perhaps restart your iPhone first before it asks for you to bring it near - you can ask Siri “restart my iPhone” if that’s easier

Apple TV* automatically becomes a home hub when you add it to HomeKit.

Follow these steps on your Apple TV:

  1. Open Settings on Apple TV.
  2. Select Users and Accounts. Make sure your name is selected under Default User and that you're signed in to iCloud with the Apple ID that you used to set up your HomeKit and Matter accessories in the Home app.
  3. Go back to Apple TV Settings, then select AirPlay and HomeKit.
  4. Scroll down and select Room, then choose a room or add a new room.

Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini, Apple TV, or iPad as a home hub - Apple Support

After this it will appear in the Home App and become a Hub
