The answer is 'yes'
After ignoring the unhelpful advice, I found you must:
As I said, this is buried in the OSX and made very user unhelpful. After hand-to-hand combat with OSX for 2 hours, I fixed this. I hope this helps others. Saving my curses for later.

Not true. I'm dealing with the OSX and the printer is irrelvant, but it is a Canon LBP236dw
From the manual (fuzzy Windows image, but it's the only shot of the print setup screen I could find).
Set the 1 sided/2 sided to 1 sided. Change any other settings to what you prefer. Then save those settings as a preset, as I did here for my Xerox printer. Second image just to show I actually have 4 presets.
Completely true. Some printer drivers give you a choice. Others don't and automatically print both sides all the time.
It may also have to do with the drivers you're using. Those macOS automatically applies after recognizing your printer often don't have anywhere near as many features as those you would get directly from the manufacturer.
If you haven't already, try installing Canon's full set of drivers.

Your printer pane should have a box to check or uncheck double sued printing but you can save a setup by renaming the default. If you have for instance a printer setting that is called color or default you can make another which has two sided printing off and it will remember those settings. Just name it something else
Your question can't be readily answered without knowing what make and model printer you're using.
