How do I know if I tried to enter my MacBook login password too many times?

How do I know if I tried to enter login password to many times and if I am locked out or not and how can I reset it . I forgot login password, after 3 tries I click on reset using Apple ID and it takes me to a padlock that is locked with a field for me to enter something
