Mini USB in the UK

I recently moved to the UK and brought my US MacBookPro with me. It's been working fine but the big UK plug and power adaptor are ungainly and I had a couple of sockets changed to the style which includes USB slots --including a miniUSB/C which I assumed would work with my laptop, but not so. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to buy a new charging cable here in the UK, or am I stuck using the big square Apple power adapter and UK plug to power my laptop?

a smart device capable of negotiating using USB-C Power Delivery Protocol is typically required for charging above the 10 Watts level. So your wall plates can charge you phone, maybe your iPad, but definitely NOT your MacBook Pro, which all require power above 65 Watts.

as for the bulky head on the UK wall plug, you might get better results with a power adapter "extension cord" available at the Apple store:
