Sounds complicated, but is actually quick and easy.

No preview file format is useful for further work.
This inability to set a print area is really KLUDGY in the extreme.
I'll suggest an upgrade - although that takes years, if ever.
Is there another p way to get a file with which you can work instead of taking the preview created file format and conberting back to numbers?

There might be other ways but I suspect they will all take longer than the second or so that it takes using the steps above.
Not clear what you mean by "converting back to numbers."
