You don't have to use a Debit card or Apple Cash to deposit into the Apple Savings account. You can add your credit union checking account your Savings account bank accounts via routing code and account number. Conversely the Savings account also has a routing code and account number you can use to transfer money to it.

Yes you can. You can link your debit card into your Wallet and subsequently use it with Apple Cash by choosing Add Money and this will allow you to move money to pay the Apple Card. I'd run into problems getting my credit union added to Apple Card directly because they would not do a 3rd party account verification over the phone with anyone including Goldman Sachs. Kinda crazy when Venmo, PayPal etc have done this without a lot of song and dance. The Apple Cash mechanism was the only way to pay off my card and the debit mechanism appears to be fee-free so I'm good with it although it is a bit roundabout.
