How do I redownload macOS after wiping my drive on MacBook Air?

I pulled out my old MacBook Air (not sure the exact year, but it's from around 2015) and tried to reset it to give to my mother. It was running High Sierra, and I figured that after I wiped the drive I would update it to the newest macOS. Successfully cleared the drive using Disk Utility, but I haven't been able to use the "Reinstall macOS" option from the macOS Utilities screen (accessed by restarting my computer and holding Cmd + R). Whenever I try, it tells me to hit continue to "set up the installation of macOS High Sierra" and then when I do, it tells me that "The recovery server could not be contacted."

Things I've tried:

  • Checked my internet connection
  • Checked my date/time of the computer
  • Attempted to create a bootable install of macOS Ventura using a flash drive (using these instructions: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support ). Successfully created the bootable install, and was able to access the bootable volumes screen when booting up my computer (pressing option + the power button). Was able to confirm my internet connection and select the bootable install, but when I pressed return I just got sent back to the back screen with the nought symbol instead of the Apple logo again.

Part of your answer is simple. Your 2015 MacBook Air cannot run macOS 13 Ventura. MacBook Airs 2018 and later are compatible. Your MacBook can’t update past macOS 12 Monterey.
