so i don't have an iPhone but I have Apple ID & iCloud & a Macbook Air. i want to send text messages from the Mac without linking it to a iPhone. will this work?

No. SMS / MMS text messages are sent from cell phones, and a Mac isn't one. You can only use the Messages app to send and receive iMessages. Forwarding text messages to or from a Mac requires an iPhone.
