My phone wont update apps

I looked up and tried everything for my phone to update apps and it wont. I dont wanna put a payment method on there why is it trying to force me to add a payment method to update/download apps

my phone won't allow me to download apps its saying I need to fix my payment methods I can not download an new things on my phone every time I attempt too it tells me to up date my payment method I already have my card in my phone so I'm not sure what to do about this. and I shoudn't need my card to download apps that I don't have to purchase.

Your payment method serves as additional identity verification. You will not be charged for anything unless you purchase something.
