Google Photos is affecting iCloud photo backup

Hi World,

How’s it going?

I am hoping you might be able to help me with a Google issue that has been dogging me for the past few months. So far though, Apple Support punted, and the two “support numbers” for Google have proven unsurprisingly useless.

Way back when Google Photos was launching (?) I think we all joined it as a great backup for our photos. Fast forward to 2023, data from Google Photos counts to data storage limits on my Google Drive account which includes my Gmail account (which is my primary email account). I don’t need GPhotos as a backup for photos. And if I can delete the photos that are on the Drive account, my Gmail account will be able to function unfettered.

Problem: any photo I delete on Google Photos automatically deletes on iCloud. I attach a post that I found on support.google as well as a post that I found on Apple Community. Neither provide solutions to this issue.

I could of course increase storage space on my Drive account but I already have 2 TB of backup on my Apple One account.

Any help or insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

john

Sorry google photos works in the reverse order to conserve data on your phone by allowing you to backup there and delete it off your phone.

You can start deleting mass emails in your trash/junk in gmail or buy more storage from them.

You need to address the issue with google, post in their forum as well https://support.google.com/photos/?hl=en#topic=6128818

I am ready to scream with this same issue. I now just want to delete Google from my iPhone. I already have a huge cloud storage with apple and only got Google so some of my android friends could share photos with me. Now it seems Google is so integrated with my IOS that it will be impossible to delete this app (Google Photos) without risking loss of many precious photos. The app has never backed up my entire library even though I now have lots of Google storage. The directions seem to be purposely vague and incomplete. Even now, with your post, they did NOT answer your question. Sigh...
