Touch ID not working on websites

Up until recently, opening a website for which I previously saved a login, a popup would show that contained the login id . Pressing Touch ID would recall and fill the used ID and password. That has stop working. No popup. All logins have to be done manually.

The Touch ID to unlock the Macbook's screen still works correctly.

Looking at password setting for a particular website, it says 'Never Saved' which I know is false. If I put in a password for that 'Never Saved' website, I do not get the prompt to save the password.

FOUND IT! In Safari Settings, under the 'AutoFill' tab, all the options were off (not sure how they got that way but this is the wife's MAC so...). Anyway, I turned on the one for 'User names and passwords' and it now works!

Toggle the settings off if necessary...

reboot into SafeBoot mode to clear cache & sort anomalies.

Turned off the setting in the 'Touch ID & Password' option in settings. Restarted in safe mode. Turned on the setting but no change in either safe or regular mode.

Please note that we have 2 Macbook Air (M1) and they both used to work correctly. Now one does and one does not. I've compared what settings I can and see no difference. On the one that works, I am prompted or, if I have not saved a password yet, I get prompted to save or not.

I looked in 'Passwords' in Settings and found several websites for which a user ID and password have been saved. In trying to login on those sites, no prompt to use the save info is given and ity must be done manually. Keep in mind, this is very recent changed as it used to work before.

Ok guys... I'm still in need here!

I my previous post I said "I looked in 'Passwords' in Settings and found several websites for which a user ID and password have been saved. In trying to login on those sites, no prompt to use the save info is given and ity must be done manually. Keep in mind, this is very recent changed as it used to work before."

I left out 'not' as in "found several websites for which a user ID and password had NOT been saved."

As I understand the system, if you have not saved a login for a specific site, the next time you login, you should be prompted to save the login or changed password. That is not working on one of our Macbook Air (M1). It works fine on one Macbook air (M1) but not the other (on which I used to work.)

Also, in Safari>Settings>Passwords... the sites which (falsely) say 'Never been saved' are not editable like the ones that have been saved.

Touch ID on websites was one of primary reasons we bought he second M1 Macbook Air so this is a real pain!
