Any way to disable ads in the "Read Now" tab of the Books app?

I started getting massive amounts of ads in the Books app about a week or two ago, and I really cant put up with it anymore. Nine out of twelve of the rows are nothing but ads now. It goes "Continue"(not ads), "Current Bestsellers"(ads), "The $9.99 Collection"(ads), "Want to Read"(not ads), and then it's another seven rows of ads. To add insult to injury, the ad rows are also much bigger than the non-ad rows.

This is an insane amount of ads, I don't think I've ever seen a single page so heavily inundated with ads before on any device, app, or website I've used before. Over three fourths of the page is nothing but ads.

For anything googling about this in the future, I figured out how to disable the ads (more like entirely disable the book store lol)

  1. Go to "Screen Time" in the settings app
  2. Go to "Content & Privacy Restrictions", hit "Allowed Apps", and disable "Book Store".
  3. Go back to "Content & Privacy Restrictions", hit "Content Restrictions", and set "Books" to "Clean".

Thankfully for me I never bought anything from Apple's book store so doing this doesn't cost me anything. If I had books that I could no longer access because of this, I'd blame Apple for ruining their app/store with ads and just reacquire them through some other means for "offline viewing" 😉.

Another less clean and more involved method I was using until I discovered the above method was:

  1. Go to "Cellular" in the settings app and disable the Books app's ability to use cellular data so it cant contact Apple's ad servers when off WiFi
  2. This is the more difficult/involved step, but you basically need to sign into your router/modem and block "books.apple.com". I know xfinity routers and asus routers can do this, it's a basic a parental control feature that most routers should support at this point. Your iPhone/iPad needs to be using your router/modem as its DNS server for this to work, if you don't know what that is and haven't changed any WiFi settings in your iPhone/iPad it probably already is. There's many different routers and internet service providers out there, each with their own way of doing things, so I cant offer more help in this regard. What I'd recommend if you need help is contacting either your internet service provider or the manufacturer of your router and asking them to help you block a website on your network.

@melissarinkel

I've actually never used iCloud, or purchased a Book from Apple's store, so I wouldn't be able to tell you. What I do is copy epubs from my Windows 10 computer to my iPhone via iTunes, and it works great. I've also downloaded epubs directly on my iPhone with Safari, and they get copied into the Books app after going into the Files app and tapping on them.

Maybe you can go into settings and disable iCloud for just the books app?
