After IOS 17.2 update all photos more than 2 days old disappeared from my iPhone 12 Pro Max.

  • I am signed in to the right appleID
  • iCloud Photo sync is ON
  • Photos are NOT in Recently Deleted
  • Turned phone off and back on
  • iCloud back up is ON
  • When I login to iCloud on my computer other data is there, but not the photos?
  • Fortunately, I have an earlier backup of phone on iTunes (from before I decided to start using iCloud backup) and can restore from that backup. That backup will have most of the photos that have been lost, but I will lose other data that has been updated since that back up, ie, notes, reminders.
  • If I restore using iTunes, in order to get photos back, will iCloud restore notes, reminders, etc. previously backed up on iCloud, or will iCloud do a new back up and wipe out the previously backed up notes and reminders?

Since others have had the same problem, I'm replying to my own question with an update ... I didn't want to take a chance on using iTunes back up to restore photos and losing other data, so did NOT do restore. In addition to iTunes back up, the important photos on my phone are also on my compute. My concern is not the photographs, but references like auto insurance proof of coverage, discount coupons, memberships, etc. Of course, a time consuming task trying to remember exactly what had been on the phone!

My settings are definitely NOT on auto update IOS and I will confirm that others aren't losing data before I move forward with the next update!
