Trouble synching iPhone and iMac

I have an iPhone 8 running v15.6.1 and am trying to sync to iMac running v 11.6.8. I can't get past step 2 of 5 in synching--I just get stuck with a moving diagonal striped bar. Any tips? Thanks

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15
