How long will it be until a new laptop or desktop will need an upgrade?

I'm about to purchase another laptop or desktop. I'm concerned with Apple products because they last for 2-3 years then they have to be upgraded. After that they seem to fail quickly. So I'm wondering how long the new laptops and desktops last.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Could you elaborate on how the Apple computers you have used in the past have failed?


My experience has been that if you buy a new computer with RAM/SSD one-step larger than your current needs to allow breathing room to grow you can expect 5+ years of life, with 6-9 years typical.
