I'm about to purchase another laptop or desktop. I'm concerned with Apple products because they last for 2-3 years then they have to be upgraded. After that they seem to fail quickly. So I'm wondering how long the new laptops and desktops last.

My experience has been that if you buy a new computer with RAM/SSD one-step larger than your current needs to allow breathing room to grow you can expect 5+ years of life, with 6-9 years typical.
