High fan noise when in Login screen after restarting, on my MacBook.

After some recent updates this has started occurring.

  • Restart computer. Something is using resources, so that heat builds up and fans build to max. Eventually the computer shuts down for self protection, presumably. FileVault ON.

  • Try again with FileVault OFF, after decrypting the drive. No building fan, computer stays in sleep.

  • Try again with FileVault ON, same as bullet 1.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) - Monterey 12.7.4 (21H1123)

The workaround is to either disable FileVault; or login immediately after a restart.

Apple please fix this. This is a more recent annoyance.

I've done:

Safe Mode

Reset NVRAM

Reset SMC

Apple Recovery Diagnostics

No change.

Remember the problem occurs after a restart and during the login screen ONLY; the drive is still encyrpted. As far as I'm aware login items only start after login & decryption. So it can't be one of those. The building fan problem goes away after login & decryption, all the login items load. Security suite, VPN, etc. 2 minutes later the fan is idle; which is normal behaviour.

It's an old machine that has never been opened, there's probably some dust inside. I doubt that would have much of an effect on the problem. I've read in other fora that somebody took a Macbook in to the Apple Bar for the same problem. The tech said he suspected that a runaway FileVault process was to blame. His solution was to downgrade to Sierra (reinstall), then upgrade to High Sierra. Problem Solved.

I just hope that Apple can do something in an update, because I can't be bothered with a clean install!!
