No sound from headphone jack

Mac Pro 2019 - MacPro7,1 - 3.5GHz

Sonoma 14.4

My headphone output quit after using the Microsoft Online speech-to-text converter through VB-Cable,

a virtual sound Input/Output software device.

While troubleshooting this problem I heard an "alert chirp" through my headphones when I switched to the Apple Diagnostics Internet Recovery mode. Hearing that sound made me think that I might not need a new Input/Output board. That is the only sound I have been able to get through my headphones since using

VB-Cable.

I have tried restarts, changing audio settings in Audio/MIDI Setup and the Sound System Settings.

I tried quitting some Core Audio processes in my Activity Monitor.

Any suggestions on what else I can try before paying for a new Input/Output board?

The most frequent issue with headphone jacks going dead is that the mechanical portion of the jack got stuck.

The most frequent solution is the vigorously insert and remove the plug a dozen times or more.

Your problem sounds like you have an unresolved software conflict.

¿can the jack send ANY sounds in Safe mode, if you change the default settings so that the headphone is the default output?

Thank you for your response.

I tried re-inserting the headphone jack multiple times, also with a toothpick. No change.

Safe mode startup is not audio friendly. Headphone access in System Settings disappears in safe mode,

The Alert Sounds in System Sound Settings are grayed out, and the Music app does not play sounds.

I have been unable to gain access to Apple Diagnostics on the internet, what I get is the spinning Earth for 2 hours. I do get an alert chirp in my headphones when I first attempt to connect.

if you can get any noises whatsoever, your headphone connection is still alive, and the problem likely lies in software, somewhere.
