I upgraded my iMac to Sonoma and it will not go past the login screen. I started in recovery mode and it said to disable FileVault and I did that and the scroll bar at the bottom gets to halfway and then nothing. Screen will go blank and nothing happens! Anyone have an idea on what to do?

Would you please provide us with which exact model is your iMac. You mentioned that you upgraded it to macOS Sonoma ... or are at least attempting to. What was it running before you tried upgrading?
Just to make sure I understand. You started the upgrade process but the end result is that you cannot log into your user account at the login screen. Is that correct? ... and now you are trying again via Recovery Mode ... correct?
