Mac Studio M1 USB C Adapter dosen't work on the Thunderbolt 4 ports

I have an Anker USB C to ethernet adapter I'm trying to use on my Mac Studio M1. However, I can't get it to work on the back Thunderbolt 4 ports, but only on the front two USB-C Ports. I had the assumption that Thunderbolt 4 was backward compatible with USB C.

Is there something I'm missing?

after you install the physical adapter, you generally have to go to

Settings/Prefs > Network. ...

and ADD an interface, so that the exact interface for the port you are connecting to can be added to your MacOS.

My guess is that the USB-port interface got added easily, maybe even automatically, and the Ethernet interface requires additional manual intervention.
