Accidental “tap to pay” activated by iPhone SE3

When I hold my iPhone 14PM close to my iPhone SE3, a “tap to pay” event is triggered on my 14PM, see photo. I didnt ask for this and I wish to disable this trigger, but I don’t know how.

i haven’t set up any “tap to pay” accounts, this just happened, I think after installing iOS 17.

I have an update. I forgot to mention I also have my train check-in check-out card in the same case where the iPhone SE3 is in. it's the white with red card in the picture.

So I tested cards out, cards in, one card in, card in top, middle, lower position and guess what I found that triggers the Apple Pay event?

  • It really is the white with red card
  • no Apple Pay trigger without the card
  • no Apple Pay trigger without the phone either
  • card needs to be in the top position
  • card needs to slide a little bit higher than in the picture, so that the card top edge aligns with the edge of the leather case
  • the iPhone SE3 display needs to be on. No need to unlock the phone, just display on works
  • If the display is off when I bring the 14ProMax to the SE3, no event. When I then press the SE3 right button while the 14PM is still on top, the event is triggered.
  • When I first press the SE3 right button to activate the display and then immediately bring the 14ProMax to the SE3 (before the display goes black again), the event is triggered

So the train card definitely interacts with the NFC chip in the phone.

I pushed the card downward, like in the picture, now the Apple Pay trigger hasn't showed up so far (10 tries).

On my iPhone 14PM, yes. And thank you for weighing in!

and I use those cards for payments daily and they work fine. However I have not stored any cards or pay methods or pay apps on my iPhone SE3.

when I lay the 14PM on top of the SE3 the payment pop-up just comes up on my iPhone 14PM as if I’m at a pay terminal in a store. So the SE3 triggers a pay event even though it has not been configured as “tap to pay” unit.

Hi Jeff,

I followed your instructions precisely, but the Apple Pay event keeps getting triggered.

I think we should accept that this is a mysterious edge case where a normal iPhone SE3 without any cards added in Wallet combined with an ordinary Train Transit card triggers such an event, on an iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I push the train transit card fully downward (like in the picture) I don't get any triggers anymore. So my problem has been solved.

Thank you very much!
