Issue with AirPods Pro 2 and iOS 18: Ringtone Volume Extremely Loud

Since updating my devices to iOS 18, I've encountered an issue with my AirPods Pro 2 when receiving calls. The problem I am encountering is that my ringtone plays through my airpods and the volume is directly linked to the ringtone volume set in the phone’s settings. However, the problem is that the ringtone plays at an extremely loud volume in my AirPods, loud enough to be heard from across the room. This is extremely uncomfortable and potentially harmful experience when I receive calls, as the sound blasts through my AirPods probably exceeds 100db!

Adjusting the ringtone volume in settings to reduce the volume in my AirPods is not a viable solution because it also affects the volume of other essential features, such as my alarm. Lowering the ringtone volume means my alarm becomes too quiet to wake me up in the morning, which makes this issue even more disruptive.

This problem is new and only started occurring after the iOS 18 update. I’m looking for any advice on how to fix or work around this issue without compromising my alarm volume.

Count me in as another victim of this ear trauma…it has been driving me crazy, so glad I am not the only one dealing with it. I have fooled with a bunch of setting to try and figure it out without luck (INCLUDING lowering the ringer volume, which I though helped initially, but then my ears got blown out again the next day). This is happening to me on AirPods 4 w/ANC, so it seems like it isn’t just one model having the issue.

It is quite ironic that the AirPods section/4 reveal during the iPhone 16 event focused on hearing health, only to have [what I assume is] a bug causing ear splitting ring volume in iOS 18…

I have the exact same issue since iOS 18! The incoming ring tone is deafening but after answering the call volume is at a normal level. None of the settings adjustments have helped and I have unpaired and repaired my AirPods and updated to 18.01 with no success. It is interesting because even with "hearing protection" on the incoming ringtone ignores the volume limit. I have seen this issue posted on other forums. I hope Apple comes out with a fix soon!

With iOS 18.0.1 and AirPods 4, after iOS 18 update, my "Reduce Loud Sounds" (Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety) toggles on with 90 dbs. I remember, before update, it was deactivated and I didn't have any problems with ringtone volume with AirPods. In my case, toggle off "Reduce Loud Sounds", fix issue ringtone volume extremely loud. Also, toggle on with minimun setting (75 dbs) fix it, but it also affects "Music" reproduction (it is not possible to reach very loud volumes).

My challenge is the opposite - On my Pro Max 11 with Airpods Pro 2 and ios 18.1 I cannot get the phone to ring audibly through my airpods. There's a very faint alert and ring - unhearable if there is anything else going on. I've set the ringer volume, turned off loud noise protection. Still it is not working as it did this morning before the 18.1 update.

Having the same issue.

I usually have my airpods in my ears while riding my bike through the city and often times my navigation is on.

anytime i receive a call, it goes super loud distracting me from driving and along with the ringtone even the navigation (google maps/ apple map announcing turns) starts peaking at the loudest volume possible!

(Imagine ringtone and turn navigation blasting in your ear horrendously mid driving and you cant do anything even with voice command because even siri doesn’t hear anything while i’m voice commanding it to reject the call and this goes on till i physically find the opportunity to press the volume/power button on my iphone)

Nor do head gestures work(nodding to reject the call) but that is still understandable if the sensors dont register it as a command because there’s constant vibrations coming off from the bike or speedbreakers.

(much more unstable than riding in a car)
