My HD says it is half full with iCloud drive
But I can barely find any files which are on my HHD to account for it...
Almost all of my files look like this with the little cloud to download from iCloud.
What is the point in storing everything on the cloud if it doesn't save me space on the HHD?
What's going on here?

Ah yes, I did do that... but then I turned it off because then everything just went on the cloud and it took ages to download.
But now I've got a new problem, that everything is on the cloud but still taking up space on the hard drive... :/
If you optimize storage then, and only then, would files offload from your Mac to iCloud. Otherwise, everything in iCloud is also on your Mac.
So, you'll then need to turn optimize back on. Or, you'll need to offload files to an external hard drive separate from the drive you use to keep your Time Machine (or similar) backup.
iCloud files are taking up a lot of space on my computer, even though they are not on the computer!
