The GPS Only can do EVERYTHING the cellular model can do AS LONG AS your iPhone is nearby. It cost less, does not have a monthly cellular charge, and does not require your iPhone use one of the cellular carriers that supports the Apple Watch. It can also track you exercise and sync it with your iPhone when you get home. And you can transfer music to it as if it were an iPod and play stored music via Bluetooth headphones while you are exercising (NO Streaming).

The Cellular model can leave your iPhone at home and still make phone calls, do messaging (for those services that work on the Apple Watch such as Apple Messages, and carrier SMS), get the weather, your email, Steam music, and other internet services that work on the Apple Watch, your iPhone must use a cellular carrier that supports the Apple Watch, you pay about $10 U.S. extra per month on your iPhone cellular bill, the cellular Apple Watch cost approximately $100 U.S. more than the GPS Only model.

Here is a list of all the cellular carriers that support the Apple Watch:

I was recently donated an old Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS) 2018 and I am learning to use it.

I can listen Spotify off-line when jogging if I download a playlist (max 100 songs per album) first. For some reason by default the download is often VERY slow but somehow it is much faster if Bluetooth is turned OFF on the Apple Watch so it is forced to download via Wi-Fi (and then turn Bluetooth back on so the AirPods can connect).

I have not yet tested whether Apple Music can be listened off-line.

Apple Podcasts can also be listened off-line but for some reason they must be 1. downloaded to the iPhone, and 2. AppleWatch seems to automatically download those podcasts if it is let sit in its charger for a while (I have not tried all options so I am not sure if that is true because the following page has more options I am about to try).

Add podcasts to Apple Watch – Apple Support (UK)

I have used Sports Tracker while jogging and while listening those off-line Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Annoyingly when I come back to my house's Wi-Fi area the Spotify and Podcasts pause. I am not sure if SportsTrackcer intervenes or if turning Wi-Fi OFF might help.

I have not yet tested for what else Wi-Fi is useful or if it can be turned OFF to save battery?

Bluetooth headphones (such as AirPods) generally have a range of 30-60 feet (10 to 20 meters) depending on conditions, walls, interference, etc…

But Bluetooth headphones to the iPhone have nothing to do with the Apple Watch.

That is to say

  • Bluetooth headphones paired to iPhone is 30-60 feet
  • Bluetooth headphones paired to Apple Watch is 30-60 feet
  • Apple Watch Bluetooth paired to iPhone is 30-60 feet.

If the Apple Watch and iPhone are too far apart for Bluetooth (the preferred low lower connection method), but still in your home, then they can talk via your home WiFi network.

But once your Apple Watch and iPhone are out of WiFi range and your iPhone, then the GPS only Apple Watch is no longer able to access the internet via your iPhone not WiFi, and can just record your exercise session, tell time and date, and if you have transferred music or podcasts & stored them on the Apple Watch, you can listen to that previously stored audio via Bluetooth headphones paired to to your Apple Watch.

NOTE: I do NOT know if any music streaming services allow you to store your playlist music offline on an Apple Watch. You would have to check with your service. Personally, I’m old school (because im old 😀) and all my music came on CD’s, that I copied to my Mac, then to my iPhone, and from there I was able to physically copy the music to my Apple Watch. It works when my iPhone is not nearby.

NOT: I’ve been using a GPS only Apple Watch for 6 years, because my iPhone is basically glued to my body, so it is never far away.

when you mean off line I’m assuming I wouldn’t need my phone anywhere near me?

Yes, go jogging without the iPhone.

Apple Watch Sports Tracker syncs the route length, elevations, heart rate, best route times etc after connecting with the iPhone app again and then to the Sports Tracker's website. One thing I miss from the stock Apple Watch Sports app are tactile feedbacks to the wrist at 1 kilometer intervals.
