How to get iMovie 6.0.5 update for Mojave after older download site changed?

I use since long time iMovie 6.0.3 and I like it. I do not want versions late as 6.

But in Mojave it wont start. Anyone told, 6.0.5 is necessary, but the old download site to get older updates has changed. Is there a way to get the update?

Thank you!

I too felt iMovie 6 HD was the best iMovie version they every released. However, I've found a 3rd party app that is very much like iMovie 6 HD: Photostage slideshow Producer. It's much like iMovie 6 HD in that you can set the transition, transition time, slide time, multi music tracks that you can edit, fade in and out, etc.

It takes a little learning to find the various features but it's the closest to the iMovie 6 HD I've found.

I dont know if this was correct.
Does someone know if there were a differences between 603 and 604 ?

Years ago I briefly tested 6.0.4 and did not notice any difference compared to 6.0 updated to 6.0.3. The official 6.0.4 installer Get Info below (yes, I am a pack rat):

I used iMovie 1.0.2-6.0.3HD to edit .dv and VHS-to-DV. I was appalled by later "iMovie" versions but finally was dragged kicking and screaming to Final Cut Pro. Anyways:

iLife 06 installer doesn't run on OS X 10.7 or later because it is a PowerPC application. iMovie HD 6.0 can be installed via Pacifist ($20): Open the iLife 06.mpkg installer with Pacifist, select the whole iMovie package and let Pacifist install all components to their correct places. iMovie HD 6.0.2 Combo Update and iMovie HD 6.0.3 Update can the be installed normally. OS X 10.9 is the last where iMovie HD 6.0.3 (and 6.0.4) normally runs, or in macOS 10.10-10.14: Right click to show package contents. Open contents. Open info.plist in Text Editor like BBEdit. Scroll down close to the bottom and locate line:

<key>CFBundleVersion</key>

<string>6.0.3<string>

Change the 6.0.3 to 6.0.5.

iMovie versions had some recurring annoying bugs -- let me know if you need any workarounds for them.

I liked also iMovie 1.0.2 because it allowed the user to trim the unreferenced parts of the source files. This allowed me to edit 50 hours of VHS-to-DV (more than 600 GB) and later "real" DV when booted from a tiny SCSI 20 GB IBM "Deathstar" (still running OK!) mounted inside PowerMac 8600/200 with an add-on Firewire card. Obviously trimming the source files sometimes did not work as intended so Apple removed that option in later versions (then the trimming and archiving had to be done by exporting as .dv which had several bugs that must be worked around to preserve a lossless copy). I used those old iMovie versions to export old DV (actually D8) tapes as .dv files with original quality (minus 0-6 dropped frames per hour) and I have used Final Cut Pro and ffmpeg to further post-process them to this day.

Hi everyone and thank you all for reply.

I will take a look onto Photostage...

I already have found a download option for QT 6.0.5 .

At first I did a look into the bundle and recognized the changed string and was wondering.

@ Matti: So it seems okay, I was not sure if it is really 6.0.5 because finder info says 6.0.3 and Get info says 6.0.5.

A little bit strange. But it works perfectly on Mojave.

Thanks for your hint. It may help others as well...

Its another private site, but it seemed trustworthy to me.

I dont know about the latest version. Maybe the string was hacked only by anyone, and so it shows 6.0.5.

My first impression was, that Apple has blocked iMovie 6.0.3 in any system file and I started to find that.

Maybe 605 is an app, somebody has modified, as you stated above.

I have not checked for other differences.

Edit:

I tried it manually myself.

I took 4 copies of my known good old 6.0.3 and changed the string to 6.0.4, 6.0.5, 6.0.6 and copied all to Mojave.

Result: 603 and 604 dont work. 605 and 606 (!) works.

It seems, that Apple blocked all real version numbers.

BTW. if anyone will do the change, you have finally to log out and in,

or copy the modificated file in another folder to update the finder icon.

Good luck!

Yes, 6.0.4 was the last official release of "iMovie 6 HD" and, if I remember this correctly, was only available for download to those who had acquired a new Mac with iMovie '08 ( iMovie ver 7 ) installed.

This was offered because the new iMovie '08 did not go down very well with these new users, so Apple offered this download of 6.0.4 as a means to calm things down a bit. After a few iterations of iMovie '08, where alterations/improvements were made, then iMovie 6.0.4 was no longer available to download.

As far as I am aware, 6.0.3 , 6.0.4 and the unofficial "6.0.5" are identical in use.

A few years ago, 3 or 4 ? , there was a link posted in this forum to a site for the unofficial 6.0.5 download for those that were wanting iMovie HD 6 even though this had been superseded by versions 7,8,9 and 10( AKA iMovie '08,'09,'11, and '13 as in 2008, 2009 etc).
