MacBook Pro 2017 - startup problem

I've been playing around with a MacBook Pro from a local club who have upgraded [?] to a PC because club members don't know how to use a Mac.

I've installed Ventura from the internet, but had previously cloned Catalina to it from an external drive. In both cases the laptop exhibits what I consider weird behaviour on startup…

  1. If the machine is booted and I shut down, then wait till the screen is black and press the Power button to restart, nothing happens.
  2. If I close the lid and wait several minutes the machine will startup.
  3. Sometimes I've found that holding Shift-Ctrl-Option while pressing the Power button will begin the boot process, but not always.

It's so flaky that even if the club gave the machine to me, I wouldn't want it.

Any suggestions for a fix?

You are not supposed to install any software updates from the internet!

You are only supposed use the updates provided by apple in the system settings. (Unknown sources)

So it is probably the issue of the software you have downloaded. It may contain bugs or similar

It is best to reset the whole Mac. You don't need to have the latest MacOS. Just sticking with the latest supported Software Update can do most things properly

Also the MacBook is getting quite old too. MacBooks range from 3-8 years (of normal use)
