Network drive icon remains on Sonoma desktop despite being unmounted

2020 M1 MacBook Air, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, MacOS 14.7.1 (Sonoma)

This has been happening for quite a while but I'd like to finally get to the bottom of this.

After mounting a network drive and accessing folders and files (add, delete, copy, edit, etc.) sometimes when I eject the drive the icon remains on the desktop. If I click on the icon, it opens but shows no contents. Get Info shows the correct size of the volume. The drive no longer appears in the sidebar of Finder windows. Opening Terminal and checking /Volumes, the drive is not there either. The only way to get the icon off the desktop is to log out or reboot.

What is happening here and how can I remove the icon without logging out?
