forgot password but cannot get system settings to let me create a new one

I forgot or Apple did not accept the most recent password for logging into my Apple account. My watch, my iPhone all are fine, except I CANNOT CREATE A NEW PASSWORD! I've used my touch print to access my accounts, but when I go to set a new password it gets rejected because the old password I remember is not being accepted. Please help me out of this washing machine.
