Face Time audio is very poor on several machines, where hitherto it has be excellent

I use FT to teach and never had an issue. Finding the audio quality very poor this morning on my MacAir, I changed to iPhone with FT. The same poor audio quality. I changed to iPad and had the same issue. My internet connection is strong and I have never had echoey audio. What could be the problem?
