iTunes on PC to new iPad not syncing

I have 95gb of CD music that I purchased stored in iTunes on my PC. A few years ago I synced my music to my iPhone 13 without any problems. It plays great with Apple Music without an Apple Music subscription. I recently purchased an iPad max pro and using a USB-C cable, syncing runs for quite a while and then issues a cryptic message ‘device error occurred’.
