Warning - Adding your gift card balance might trigger your unpaid subscriptions to be automatically paid
Two days ago, I received an Apple gift card and decided to redeem it through the App Store. I had two subscriptions I’d forgotten to cancel, but they hadn’t been charged to my bank account since I updated my debit card. My plan was to cancel the subscriptions right after redeeming the gift card, but to my surprise, the subscriptions were automatically resumed, and the gift card balance was used to pay for apps I don’t use or want. Confused about the charges, I requested a refund, but Apple denied my explanation and refused to issue a refund. When I spoke to an Advisor, she explained that the decision was final and there was nothing she could do to reverse the charges. She suggested that I could manually dispute the charge with my bank, but since it was partially paid using my Apple Store balance and partially with my debit card, only the portion charged to my debit card would be refunded if the dispute was successful. This experience was incredibly frustrating.
A warning to everyone: make sure to review your subscriptions before redeeming a gift card!
It's such a hassle to reach out to Apple Support for help or to escalate the issue to higher-ups, and they don’t even provide an estimated timeline for resolving the problem. It’s ironic because I’ve spent a fortune on their products, yet they don’t seem to care about addressing this bug.
