Mac mini M4 static Noise
I’ve been experiencing a persistent noise issue with my Mac Mini M4 base model. Here’s what happens:
- Noise with monitor connections: When the Mac Mini is connected to a monitor—whether it’s a Studio Display or another monitor via USB-C or HDMI—I can hear a faint noise which is not comming from the fan.
- Noise even when turned off: After some troubleshooting, I discovered that the noise also occurs even when the Mac Mini is turned off and only connected to the wall (with no other USB-C or HDMI cables attached). If I touch the chassis with one hand and hold a USB-C cable (by the metal connector) connected to a power supply with the other, the noise becomes audible.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
- Using different cables.
- Testing in different rooms and outlets.
- Connecting directly to the wall and via a power strip.
- Ensuring all power supplies are grounded with a three-pin connection.
Despite these efforts, the noise persists. It’s faint but noticeable particularly in a quiet room.
Could this be related to grounding or a design issue? I’d appreciate any insights or solutions, especially as I’m concerned this could worsen over time.
I went to the Apple Store and had it replaced. The second unit is definitely quieter but the nose is still there.
