migration failed because of an uppercase lowercase mismatch

When trying to migrate from an older 27" iMac to a 2019 21.5 running Sequoia 15.1.1 I get an error stating that the data from the target device cannot be used be cause the target device is uppercase & lowercase and the new device is lowercase only. Is there a workaround?

The older device will boot into "Target Disc" mode but otherwise will not boot up. Therefore I cannot access migration on the older device as recommened in the instructions.

I really would like to reclaim my data from the older machine otherwise I could be out some funds.
