A plug-in for making highlights more natural - controlling the flare of the white light?

Back in FCP7 days there was a lovely 3rd party plug-in, mmm, might have even made it to FCPX. I forget who created it, but I think he moved on to other things.


It was a filter that allowed one to control the 'whites' in an image, to brighten or whiten them more, to flare or mist them a bit (to make the SD/HDV video look less 'video' and more 'cinematic'. A beautiful tool. It's sort of like the current 'Bloom' .. but without abberrating all the other colours.


Wondering if anyone has seen a plug-in like that?

How's that fox_m? The old plug-in I used to have (now defunct) would allow all sorts of control over the 'whites', flaring, misting, etc. etc. It would even pick up on lighter brightnesses or reflections on walls ... I did one film where so much of the shooting was in an environment with a particularly noxious yellow light. Adding the filter allowed me to bring out the whites in the shots ... such that they neutralized the noxious fluorescent yellow. The whole thing looked so much cleaner, more natural. I'm going to try Luis' suggestion, and mess with the colour mask and the Bloom filter.

Not really sure what you're going for... this sample already looks "flared" — so I amped it up a bit.


Are you going for something like this?

This one utilizes Broadcast Safe. (I think you can actually tell this "scene" is from a green screen - there are faint telltale edges around the actors.)


Here's an example of ARRI Log C with the exact same added effects (no color board, no LUTs). The light flares have been enhanced via effect, particularly the lamp on the bookshelf. The effect is a lot more subtle on the larger reading lamp.


And here it is with the (most of the) yellow cast removed:


(not too bad for log + no LUT if I do have to say so myself.)


The one with the yellow cast is probably more accurate — it's just not what we "like to see" — or what we *think* we see.


BTW - no masks were used for these examples (although sometimes it could be necessary depending on how "blown out" the original media is.)

You never waste my time! I should have sent you a shot from the film I'm cutting. Apologies, I misunderstood and sent you a shot of what-I-was-looking-for (thus an already processed shot, which I happened to come across while watching Tom Cruise save-the-world (again) last night.


Mmm. This is an effect you created? Now can one give a website address in the forum? Like a company website? Would never want to do anything counter to the protocols here; I get soooo much good from this Forum.


I'm going to see if I can pull up a shot from the film ... here is one ... I want to be able to put a bit more 'flare' from windows to counteract the 'video' feel of situations (most of this film was shot in the HDV format - I've bumped it to 4K to see what FCPX will do with it - it actually improves the image). If you've got any suggestions for how to make HDV look more 'cinematic', I'm super all-ears!

Yes - I created the effect a few years ago. It is designed to "clean" (all) video. Every digital camera "softens" an image slightly in order to avoid moiré patterning (pixels are "hard edged"). Adding my cleaner gets rid of the "haze":


You should be able to see a diagonal separation from the original (left) to the cleaned video (right). You should be able to tell it is very slightly sharper.


Since it's able to handle a rather extreme range (thus able to handle LOG/RAW footage), it can and will blow out highlights (and crush shadows.)




Here's a wide range of the effects animated:


(animations are not really recommended for these effects — just trying to shortcut the "range").


Used with a Shape Mask to limit the light flare with shadows deepened (feel free to add more than one instance of these effects, especially if there's masking involved.)


Basically, I use these effects on *every* clip I use in projects.

I'm not quite sure what you are doing with the Tom Cruise image. The TC image was just to give an idea of what I'm wanting to do with some of my footage. I see you are adding light (white) flare, and colour grading. But HOW are you adding the flare?


Not sure what you mean about using ARRI Log 4?


"The light flares have been enhanced via effect, particularly the lamp on the bookshelf." I may be missing something here; what 'effect' are you using to enhance the light flares?

I originally wanted a sample of what you wanted to have the light bloom in — you posted the TC shot - so I "doubled down" on it.


The ARRI Log C example is just to show that the effects in question work on LOG without the need for "color correction" or LUTs.


I added the flare with very simple adjustments to the added effects.


The effects are not free, therefore I cannot provide a link to them here because I created them. Nobody else really knows anything about them, so they won't chime in either.


So... never mind. Sorry for wasting your time.
