Mail not working after update iOS 18.1.1

After updating iOS to 18.1.1, the mail app is not working. It is totally malfunction and can’t receive nor send email. Start the mail app, it just pops up a white screen. I have tried to offload the app and reinstall it. It’s the same. When I hard reset the phone, it can pop up the mail account list but freezes. How do I fix it?

@Longtimeappleuserfornow:

I can still send (attach) photos in Mail on my iPhone 12mini, iOS 18.1.1, as explained in this article:

Add email attachments in Mail on iPhone - Apple Support

And all of my Mail Accounts are still working, my 3rd party account and Apple iCloud Mail.

So not all users are having this issue, and it seems to be related to newer iPhones.

Hello Apple, are you listening? iOS 18 update has caused both us to be unable to receive INBOUND email on our Internet service provider email account. We receive message “Unable to Connect to Server, check to see your settings are correct”. Yes, my settings are correct as verified with internet provider. Was on the phone an hour with Apple support, she tried everything she knew of, nothing worked. My internet email provider says that it is the Apple 18 update that caused the problem and Apple has to make a patch! I We sincerely hope you’re working on a patch. Thank you.

NO, Apple is NOT LISTENING. This is a user-to-user forum, not a way to communicate with Apple. Apple is not going to make a patch to 500 million iPhones because YOUR iPhone has a problem. There is no problem with iOS 18; your internet provider is passing the buck to get you off the phone.

The MOST common cause of this problem:

  • Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN.

The NEXT most common: Your email account has 2 factor authentication enabled, which may require an Application Specific Password rather than your account’s regular password. Check with your email provider’s website.

Well, if you have really done everything then I guess your email will never work again.

If you tell us specifically what you did, rather than “everything”, I’m sure someone can help resolve the problem.

Here’s what would be helpful:

  • Have you updated to iOS 18.2.1 (the latest)?
  • Who is the email provider (Gmail, Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL, CenturyLink, iCloud, etc)
  • How many email accounts aren’t working, if you have more than one?
  • What specifically do you mean by “not working?” Can’t receive mail, can’t send mail, can’t set up mail, or something else?
  • Do you use VPN?
  • Is the problem on both cellular data and Wi-Fi, or on one or the other?
  • Have you tried deleting and adding back any email accounts that aren’t working?
  • Does your email account provider use 2 factor authentication?

Lost email has absolutely nothing to do with the updates to mail; lost email is a completely different problem. The update only changes the way email in the email database is displayed, it doesn’t remove any content.

These 2 steps will return the Mail app to the way it previously worked:

To remove the icons in the list view:

  • Open Settings
  • Tap Apps
  • Tap Mail
  • Turn off Show Contact Photos
  • Optionally, turn off Summarize Message Previews

To turn off Categories:

  • Open the Mail app
  • Tap on an inbox
  • Tap on ⋯⃝ in the upper right
  • Tap to check List View

I did online support and was told something was wrong with the phone. I went to an Apple Store under their advisement and they had me delete my mail account and reinstall and now I’ve lost all emails and it still won’t connect. I was told to go home and back home the phone then do a full restore to factory then reinstall the back up. Still nothing and now my iPhone XR is acting up too. I can’t access email from any iPhone now

Me too I'm having the same issue. When I google where to find the mail app settings it says settings>apps>mail but that's not there. Now my mails aren't downloading no can my mails send. And might I add, what a completely inefficient, useless, unnecessary update. I mean seriously. completely unnecessary! my goodness.
