Why are my subfolders in my mail app empty when accessing it from iphone. The content is available when accessed directly from provider.

In Settings > Apps > Mail > Accounts > [your account] > Account Settings, see if it says “IMAP” in the first section:
If it says POP (or POP3), remove the account, add it again using an incorrect password, choose IMAP, correct the password and finish the account configuration.
Remove your email account in Settings > Apps > Mail > Accounts > [your account] and add it again. This should refresh the folder hierarchy in Mail.
Yes this has reset things in the past.
The email account was removed and added back but did not resolve the issue.
Subfolders are empty
