Can’t delete pictures from photos

I’m the kind of person to take a lot of pictures, and then delete the ones I don’t want. I recently got a brand new iPhone 14 (I still have my old one, the iPhone 13). I’ve tried to delete these images for the past few days and they haven’t left my camera roll. I’ll press delete and it looks like it’s gone, but when I close the app and come back again it’s still there. It’s not in my recently deleted either. I eventually got desperate and logged into iCloud to delete it from there but I don’t want to have to do that. Does anyone know what’s going on?
