How can I stop the 'Updates Available' notification on my MacBook Pro?

How can I disable the 'Updates Available' notification that is now appearing from system preferences since Sequoia? This was removed after High Sierra and it's pretty disappointing to have to ignore this daily now. Even more frustrating is that it comes back if I just drag it off the screen??

The notification in question:

Hello, I agree with you, totally. I'm super MAD. Notifications was not the deal when I bought this computer. This was the reason I left Windows. They are windowmising Macos. I use my laptot to work, I don't want to be DISTURBED. If someone still understand the meaning of "working". Or maybe Apple is becoming an entertainment company. Maybe the next laptot will feature a 16*9 screen, lol. Apple support is gonna hear me loud monday.

The numbers of updtates are written in the drop down menu on the top right, that is enough. I update when I schedule my time to do it. Now i seriously regret "upgrading" to sequoia.

I ( me ) don't want to Update ( now ) or later tonight. I'm aware the most current version of macOS is 15.1.1 but I want to choose when I update on my machine. Also, this notification comes up for apps like FCP or SF Symbols, not just macOS updates so it's been fairly frequent (and annoying).

You can try the following two terminal commands:

defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate MajorOSUserNotificationDate -date "2030-02-07 23:22:47 +0000"

defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate UserNotificationDate -date "2030-02-07 23:22:47 +0000"

The exact dates are not significant, as long as it's sometime in the future.

I also have this issue and it's frustrating. I'm on 15.1.1, and now that 15.2 is available, I've seen the persistent "Updates Available" notification 7 times in the past 24 hours. It reappears each time I wake my laptop from sleep.

I have everything turned off in System Settings > Software Update > Automatic Updates. I'd love any solution that gets rid of the notification without having to update.

And I've had those settings off since the new system update UI came out a few release cycles ago. I also can't find an installer anywhere on my machine like is normally the case when I download an update but don't install. So, I think it isn't downloaded and doesn't have any automatic updates/downloads enabled. Yet, I'm getting this notification and would like to disable it.

This whole thing is infuriating and a sign of Apple having veered headlong into a mentality of, "We know what's best for you so just accept it!"

I'm betting it's also about Apple "Intelligence" and them wanting to force that into every aspect of our lives and through their products. Nag, nag, nag until we relent.

I haven't upgraded my devices and am looking to move out of the Apple ecosystem because of this type of BS. I'm so sick of it.

I am also trying to figure out how to turn off the annoying nag pop-up. I did update to 15.1.1 after doing this, I checked the settings you described above. I have all of them turned off, except for the bottom one "Install Security responses and system files". I will try turning that one off as well. I'm perfectly happy with a little red dot that shows up in the settings icon. What I am trying to get rid of is the "Updates Available" pop-up window.

I came back to edit my comment. After turning off ALL of the settings, I noticed that in Software Update > Automatic Updates now shows to be "Off". Here's the deal, in my experience every time you update the operating system. It requires the computer to reboot. OK, fair enough. But I want to do that on MY schedule. And I just hate being treated like a five-year-old by the operating system.

I sometimes use the Focus feature -- and have one for Work that shuts up many things.

Today, I had this pop-up and I found this support thread.

On a whim, I turned on my "Work" focus and the pop-up slid off the screen.

Maybe something like that will work for you?

Hi damat-le. Thanks for posting this, I have just used these 2 commands then restarted my Mac and, so far, no annoying nag screens. I also submitted a feedback request to Apple. I'm pretty sure it goes against their own development standards to have notifications that you can't mute or turn off!

Thanks again - good solution!

Restart the computer and see what happens

An aside if you permit me

Received a Brand New machine on October 28.

First Boot Up, as in the Out of the Box Experience

Even before I had the chance to Set it Up with my Credentials

Presto, was alerted to an update from Sequoia 15.0 to Sequoia 15.1

I chose Not to update at that time

1 Hour later, there it was

No good (again). Turning these off does not stop the nag.
