iphone itunes not working on computer

I want to update the songs on my playlists. When I plug my phone into the computer, it displays in itunes ok - I can see all the playlists, and I can play them if I want to, but I can't change the order at all. I have seen this question asked 100 times and the reply is always to make sure things are sorted by song, not the name/artist/something else, but that is not my problem. Clicking any of the columns has no effect whatsoever, and I am also not able to change the horizontal size of the columns.

I just updated the iphone and have iOS 18.1.1.

If you have set up the iPhone so that it syncs with the library, or a selection of playlists, artist, albums, etc., then you get a read-only view of the content of the device. If it is manually managed then you should be able to rearrange things and make changes. Switching between automatic sync and manual management may wipe what is already on the device, although all of the content on it really should be in the library. IIRC when updating a manually managed iPhone iTunes may remove items from the device that don't have a matching entry in the library, which is not how things worked with the OG iPods.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - Apple Community if needed.

FWIW I really recommend syncing with selected playlists. Much easier to restore the content to the device if/when needed.
