Why does my iPhone Music app not start in Shuffle Mode?

I listen to Music on my iPhone while driving. The app always starts by playing the first song in alfa order in my playlist, which is bad for a couple of reasons. 1) I get thoroughly tired of whatever the first song on my playlist is. 2) More seriously, it takes a few presses or swipes to fire up shuffle mode, and fiddling with my phone is the opposite of what I want to do when I'm ready to drive. This happens even if I get to where I'm going and leave Music open on the phone, then later get back in the truck and resume.

Based on researching this type of question, I suspect there's no way to do this. Please show me I'm wrong? TIA!

My shuffle through car play always starts the same for the very first song. I'm just in the habit of giving the song 5 seconds, then hitting the "next" arrow on the dash or steering wheel. Second song is always random. I know it never used to work this way, but I think something changed on Apple Music quite a while back, and since then, I can't change it either - and I've tried and tried.
