Why are my Apple Music purchased songs no longer available on my iPhone?

When I attempt to play songs on my iPhone that I purchased years ago I get a pop up stating, "This song is not currently available in your country or region." However, it is playable via iTunes on my PC. I'm not sure why it is available on one device but not another. Any suggestions or ideas on what the issue may be would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :)

I wonder if perhaps

  • You bought these songs from the iTunes Store (which is located in its own app on the iPhone and iPad – or in the iTunes and Music applications on Macs)
  • You have these songs downloaded to your PC
  • You do not have these songs downloaded to your iPhone
  • They are no longer available in the iTunes Store
  • When you try to play them on your iPhone, it remembers that you bought them from the iTunes Store, and tries to stream them, but then gives you the error message because the songs were pulled from the iTunes Store at some time after you bought them.

If this is the case,

  • You would definitely want to make local backups of the songs on the PC. As long as you have your own copies of those songs, you will be able to play them, but if you delete all of your local copies, you won't be able to get those songs back again.
  • If you wanted to play the songs on your iPhone, you might need to manually sync them from the PC to the iPhone (assuming that you weren't using iTunes Match or the Sync Library feature of an Apple Music subscription).

Thank you, Servant of Cats, for your response :)

All songs were downloaded from iTunes either via my PC or my MAC (which I no longer have) and are still available on iTunes. (I hadn't thought they may no longer be available so I checked to make sure.) I have the files saved but I'd hate to have re-download them and pay for them twice. The songs were individually/manually selected then synced to my iPhone (to sync my whole library would be insane - way too many, lol.) However, it couldn't hurt try and re-sync to see if that corrects the issue. If not, I could try deleting the song from my phone and then adding them back in. Maybe that'll work.

Some pretty simple tips -- feel foolish I didn't think of them before posting. Thanks again!

Quick edit/update to my response:

I was wondering if changing the name/email associated with the account would have an impact. When I first starting downloading, it was a different address than the one I'm using now. And even though I've authorized my devices with the new address, iTunes will occasionally default to the original one. Not sure if that matters or not; just a thought.

If songs purchased from the iTunes Store are still available in the iTunes Store, I believe that you would be able to download them again without charge. The iTunes Store app on the iPhone has a Purchased section (under the “More” tab) that would let you do that. And in the main part of that app, songs that you had bought would have the word “PLAY” next to them instead of a price.

This assumes that you are still logged into the same Apple ID / Apple Account that you used when you purchased the songs.
